In “Sadness versus Depression”, Dr. Moncher first reviews a Catholic view of the human person that provides the framework for all 3 parts of this series. He also discusses distinct yet complementary roles of a psychotherapist and a spiritual director or guide. In presenting about sadness and depression, he presents an overview of clinical depression along with a discussion of normal, everyday sadness that all experience and that will be frequently encountered in spiritual direction. He also discusses a similar distancing between worry and clinically significant anxiety.
In “Marital Trouble versus Serious Marital Rupture”, Dr. Moncher presents what are typical areas of struggle in most marriages at some point, followed by a discussion of five critical processes that point to serious marital trouble: criticism, defensiveness, stonewalling, contempt, or emotional disengagement. He discusses how spiritual directors can in their role offer support for spouses in their efforts repair their marital relationships, along with guidance regarding when a referral might need to be made to a credentialed marital therapist.
In “Human Relationships and our Relationship with God” Dr. Moncher reviews the Catholic view of the human person with an eye towards the importance of family relationships and their influence on our understanding of God. In this context he presents Attachment theory as a useful psychological conceptualization, and discusses in particular the importance of motherhood and fatherhood in child development, both at the natural and supernatural level. Finally, he discusses dilemmas that are common to all those in the helping professions, when to make referrals, and how to manage challenges in work.
